How does a person break into the Marketing / Branding career field?

I was wondering how people get their start in the Marketing / Advertising agency field? Living in the Philadelphia market, their are plenty of Marketing agencies but most that have positions open do not want recent college grads with minimal experience. How can a person gain valuable experience to enter into this career choice?
